Is winter over?

Today is Ground-hog Day celebrated in regions of the United States and Canada. Folklore decrees that if the groundhog emerges from its burrow in cloudy conditions then winter is over; however, if the sun is shining, and the groundhog retreats from its shadow, then winter continues for a further six weeks.
More animals in the calendar? How about the March hare , the hobby-horse or swan-upping (July)?
