Imp, wag, loon

January 28, 2011

Every month we select an entry from the Historical Thesaurus of the OED to show how the language of a particular subject, idea or emotion has changed over time. January's subject has been youth which brings with it a long and rich history—celebratory, romantic, and condemnatory: from cub and hobbledehoy to frumberdling and loon.

There's more topical content for January on our What's new page, and there'll be a new subject from the HTOED coming soon.
