Australia Day

January 26, 2011

26 January is Australia Day, the date which commemorates the landing of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788. To mark the day, Professor Bruce Moore, director of the Australian National Dictionary Centre, considers aspects of modern Australian English: can you tell a larrikin from a digger, and did you know we have Australians to thank for plonk?

To mark the day you can also read the story of the First Fleeters and of Captain Arthur Phillip, the fleet's commander, from the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
