Think of a word
January 18, 2011
Today is the birthday of the physician and philologist Peter Roget (1779 - 1869), now known worldwide for his pioneering Thesaurus of English words and phrases, classified and arranged so as to facilitate the expression of ideas, and assist in literary composition (1852).
To mark the day, why not try out the Historical Thesaurus of the OED, another remarkable contribution to the world of words— this time charting changing meanings over time.
There's more available on the HTOED and, via the Oxford DNB, you can also read the story of Roget and his Thesaurus.
