X factor - decision time!

Many British viewers are anticipating this weekend’s final of the television talent competition, The X Factor. Traced to 1930 the term X factor originally referred to ‘an indefinable but important element’. It gained its modern association with charisma and ‘star quality’ in the closing decades of the 20th century, but also retains a military association denoting conduct not seen in civilian life.
