Public library access from home

Most public libraries in the UK and Ireland subscribe to OED Online (thanks in part to a landmark agreement between OUP and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council). Many of them offer ‘remote access’, which means that, if you are a registered reader,

  • you can access the whole of OED online at home, free, using your library's subscription.

You will be directed to a special page where you can log in with your library card number. For links to these pages, see the details link beside your library in the list below, or ask your librarian about getting a free library card.

All subscribing public library authorities in the UK and Ireland are listed below, with links through to their websites. If you can't find your library on our list, this useful list of UK public library websites may help (this is an external link to a privately maintained website). Note that not all the libraries on this list offer remote access: check with your library.


The rest of the world

  • Of course, many libraries elsewhere in the world subscribe, and may well offer remote access. Ask your librarian whether your library subscribes.
