What material is included on the CD-ROM?

The 20-volume Second Edition of the OED, the Additions Series (Volumes 1-3), plus almost 2,000 new words and phrases from the OED's ongoing research programme.

Are the OED Additions Series volumes included on the CD-ROM?

Yes, the Additions Series volumes are included on version 3.1 of the CD-ROM.

What are the minimum system requirements?

  • PC with minimum 200 MHz Pentium-class processor
  • 64 MB RAM
  • 32-speed CD-ROM drive
  • Windows® 95, 98, 98 Se, Me, NT4, 2000, or XP
  • 1.1. GB hard disk space to run the software from the CD-ROM and 1.7 GB to install the OED to the hard disk
  • SVGA monitor: 800 x 600 pixels, 16-bit (64k, high colour) setting

Is the CD-ROM compatible with Windows 2000?

Yes, version 3.1 of the CD-ROM is fully compatible with Windows® 2000.

Is the CD-ROM compatible with Windows Me?

Yes, version 3.1 of the CD-ROM is fully compatible with Windows® Me.

Is the CD-ROM compatible with Windows XP?

Yes, version 3.1 of the CD-ROM is fully compatible with Windows® XP.

Is there a Mac version of the CD-ROM?

The decision has been made that development of a Mac version of the OED on CD-ROM is not, at this time, a viable option.

Is there a link to Microsoft Word or to other word processors?

Yes, the automatic Look-up feature enables fast access to OED headwords from any Microsoft Office® 97, 2000, or Me application. This feature can also be used within the OED CD-ROM itself to look up words in the definition or quotation text.

Can the CD-ROM be used in place of the default spellchecker or dictionary in a word processor?

No, the CD-ROM cannot be configured to replace the default spellchecker or dictionary in a word processor.

Does the CD-ROM include audio pronunciation?

There is no audio pronunciation on the CD-ROM.

Is it possible to install the CD-ROM to run over a network?

No - the CD-ROM cannot be networked. It is available in a single-user version only. Network licences are, however, available for OED Online.

Can I install and run the CD-ROM from my hard disk?

Yes. A new installation option makes it possible to run the Dictionary from the hard disk. CD validation is required every 90 days.

I bought the previous version of the OED on CD-ROM. Can I upgrade?

Yes, a substantially discounted upgrade of the OED on CD-ROM version 3.1 is available.

Users of a previous version need to send proof of ownership:

  • Users of the OED on CD-ROM versions 2.0 and 3.0 need to send photocopies of the Installation and Data CDs

  • Users of the OED on CD-ROM version 1.0 need to send photocopies of the installation floppy diskette and the data CD

  • Send a receipt or other proof of purchase showing title and ISBN

Customers in North and South America:

  • Users of the OED on CD-ROM version 2.0 simply need to purchase a copy of the [off-site link] upgrade product, install it, and the upgrade disc will carry out authentication by requiring presentation of the version 2.0 data disc.

  • Users of the OED on CD-ROM version 1.0 need to send:

    • a photocopy of the CD showing the OED/OUP label
    • a photocopy of the installation disk showing OED/OUP label
    • a photocopy of the copyright page from the spiral-bound User's Manual
    • a photocopy of page 50 from the spiral-bound User's Manual

    OR

    • a receipt of purchase showing title and ISBN or other proof of purchase showing title and ISBN

Will the CD-ROM be updated?

The CD-ROM will not be updated in the foreseeable future.

If I buy the CD-ROM, will I get a discount on future updated versions?

Yes, it is normal policy for existing users to get a discount on updated and upgraded versions, providing that these instructions are followed.

How many CDs will I receive?

Two - an installation disc and a data disc.

Who should I contact if I have problems installing or using the CD-ROM?

The Oxford University Press web site has a [off-site link] technical support page for the OED (Second Edition) on CD-ROM version 3.1.
