Searching for entries by first cited work

Aim: to search for all words whose earliest evidence is from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar

  1. Open the Full Text search panel by clicking [Show Simple Search form].

  2. Type Jul. C. into the input box.

This is the abbreviation used in the Dictionary for this particular work. See also other abbreviations of Shakespearean plays, a general list of abbreviations used in work titles, and the tips on searching for abbreviated words.

  3. Click on the list box (showing full text by default) and choose first cited work as your text area. This confines your search to the titles of works containing the earliest recorded usage of words.

  4. Click [Perform Full Text search] to start the search.

  5. The results list is displayed. The results include airless, chimney-top, and honeyless.
