Restricting a search to the results of a previous search

Aim: to find words used by Jane Austen that originated in French, and which were only borrowed into English in the 18th century

The previous search (see example 2) found words used by Jane Austen that originated in French. The next search will filter this list of words, leaving only those which first appeared in English in the 18th century.

  1. Open the Advanced search page by clicking [Show Advanced Search form] .

  2. Make sure the entries tab is selected.

  3. Type 1700-1799 into the first input box.

  4. Select first cited date from the corresponding search area list box.

  5. In the panel to the right of the search form

    • click the checkbox labelled ‘Restrict to results of’
    • select the previous search radio button. (The previous search should be the one described in example 2.)
  6. Click [Perform Advanced search] to start the search. (The search performed is for words from the previous results list (i.e. used by Jane Austen and borrowed from French) which first appeared in the English language between the years 1700 and 1799.)

  7. The results list is displayed. The results include pelisse, voilà , and zigzag.

  8. To go to the top of any entry, click its name (in the left-hand column). To go to the first match in any entry, click the matching term (in the right-hand column).
